Course Overview and Target Audience
This course is designed to provide participants with the newest developments in the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease (CBC). The course will focus on medical surveillance and discuss the immunologic basis of the chronic beryllium disease test. The latest research on exposure, epidemiology, and clinical care as well as an international overview of beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease will be presented to participants. This course is designed for occupational medicine practitioners, pulmonologists, medical directors and health & safety managers of beryllium-using facilities, industrial hygienists, health care professionals involved in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients with beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease or in industrial beryllium surveillance programs, case managers, epidemiologists, geneticists, and immunologists

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to:
  • Identify industries and occupations associated with a risk for the development of chronic beryllium disease
  • Discuss the difficulties of relying on airborne levels of beryllium to control risk
  • Explain the need for immunologic testing in screening and surveillance programs related to chronic beryllium disease
  • Describe the knowledge of the progression from beryllium sensitization to disease
  • Review treatment options for beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease
  • Discuss current practice modules for protecting workers from beryllium exposure
